Throat surgery

Throat surgery at ENT Specialist Practice Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter Franz in Vienna

Throat surgery is a central component of modern ENT surgery and is used to treat a wide variety of conditions such as chronic inflammation, enlarged tonsils, or cysts. At my ENT practice in Vienna, I offer precise diagnostics, individual consultation, and minimally invasive surgical procedures to ensure the best possible results and a speedy recovery.

Oral cavity, throat, and salivary glands

  • Adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy
    • An adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove enlarged throat tonsils (also called adenoids). This procedure is usually performed on children when the enlarged tonsils cause breathing problems, snoring, or middle ear infections.

    • A tonsillectomy is the complete surgical removal of the palatine tonsils (tonsils). It is often performed for recurrent tonsillitis or to treat breathing difficulties caused by enlarged tonsils.

  • Tonsillotomies
    • A tonsillotomy is a surgical procedure in which the palatine tonsils (tonsils) are only partially removed in order to reduce their size. This contrasts with tonsillectomy, in which the tonsils are completely removed. Tonsillotomy is often performed on children with enlarged tonsils to correct breathing problems, snoring, or sleep disorders, while preserving the tonsils' immune function.
  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)
    • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a surgical procedure to widen the airways in the throat area. The aim of the operation is to treat sleep apnea and snoring by removing excess tissue in the soft palate, uvula, and throat.
  • Submandibular gland removal
    • A submandibulectomy is the surgical removal of the submandibular gland. This operation is usually performed when there is recurrent swelling or inflammation of the gland caused by salivary stones or, more rarely, tumors.
  • Parotidectomies with facialis preparation
    • A parotidectomy is a surgical procedure in which the parotid gland is partially or completely removed. The procedure is usually performed for tumors (benign or malignant) or, less commonly, for chronic inflammation of the gland. In some cases, an extracapsular dissection may be performed, in which only the tumor and surrounding healthy tissue are removed.

  • Removal of lymph nodes in the throat (lymphadenectomy) and/or neck dissection

    • The removal of lymph nodes in the throat, also known as lymphadenectomy or neck dissection, is a surgical procedure performed for either diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Lymph nodes in the neck may be removed when diagnosing unclear swellings or treating cancer, especially in the head and neck area.

Larynx and trachea:

  • Surgical removal of benign and malignant laryngeal tumors
  • Vocal cord polyp removal
    • Vocal cord polyps are benign growths on the vocal cords that can cause hoarseness and voice changes. They are often caused by overuse of the voice or irritants such as smoke, but can also occur without any apparent cause. Treatment is usually surgical, involving removal of the polyp.
  • Reinke's edema removal
    • Reinke's edema is an accumulation of fluid in the so-called Reinke's space, a layer between the surface layer of the vocal folds and the underlying tissue. This fluid retention leads to a thickening of the vocal folds, which manifests itself in a deeper and rougher voice. Women are particularly affected, and smoking is a common risk factor.
